At Chatham Nursery School, assessment helps us identify any gaps in learning early so we can provide the right support for both children and their families.

We recognise that every child develops at their own pace, and not all will follow a typical progression. However, this doesn’t limit their ability to make progress—we focus on each child’s unique strengths.

Our priority is quality time with children, ensuring assessments do not take away from meaningful interactions that support their development. We follow the Birth to Five Matters framework and our long-term curriculum maps to guide our approach.

We use Tapestry, an online learning journal, to document and share children’s experiences and learning. This keeps families engaged and connected to their child’s journey at nursery.

Statutory Progress Check at Age Two

Between the ages of two and three, we complete a statutory progress check, providing parents or carers with a short written summary of their child’s development in the three prime areas.
